How do I introduce a second dog into our home?
Depending on the age
of your dog you may need to introduce them off your property – in a
neutral area. If one dog is a puppy and the other dog is a couple of
years old, it isn’t necessary to introduce them off your property. If
however they are both over 6months and are of similar ages, regardless
of what sex they are, it is helpful to introduce them off your property.
Our first dog is not
destructive with their toys, is friendly and playful. Will this change
when the new dog comes home?
An original dog may
get a little protective of their toys when a new dog is introduced. I
wouldn't interfere. The old dog will most likely show little acts of
power play (barking or nipping) towards the pup, and this is a good
thing generally as it teaches the pup respect for the hierarchy.

What do I do if my dog is eating its faeces?
Dogs
tend to eat their faeces because of two potential reasons. Either they
are lacking a mineral in the diet - possibly copper. Or they are
suffering from boredom.
Dogs
excrete something like 30% undigested food so there is an attraction to
a dog who is bored or feels hungry or unsatisfied on the diet it is
being fed, that is, lacking appropriate minerals.
If you
have corrected your dogs diet, you still may not stop your dog eating
their faeces as this behavior may have already developed into a habit,
and the dog often continues eating the faeces.
My
first book is full of recommendations on appropriate dog diet. I always
encourage my customers to improve their dogs diet as the first point of
call. Remember though, NO TREATS BETWEEN MEALS.
To
over come the boredom:
-
Make
sure the dog is well exercised both morning and night.
-
That
can include long walks as in two or three miles a time for a little dog
– longer for a larger dog.
-
Games
like tug of wars and chasing a ball.
-
Enrolling in an obedience class and doing training them.
-
Consider a second dog for company.

How do I stop my dog urinating in its own bowl?
Urinating in the water bowl can mean a number of things – firstly
though, I wouldn't leave the water bowl out for them to do this. If
your dog has water on offer before you leave home, and water on offer
when you return home, this will help remove the temptation.
When
you leave them for more than 4 hours of time give them a bone or pigs
ear to chew on.
Also
remember as per the chapter on psychology; don't talk to your dog for
half an hour before you leave home and make sure your dog is calm before
you acknowledge them on your return – this may take up to fifteen
minutes. It is important not to enter into a celebration with the dog
after a long absence.
It is
important the pack structure rules are firmly in place; doesn't mean
much to us, but very important to your dog (a little domestic wolf).
If
stress is involved such as the dog being alone for long periods and gets
bored and lonely. Please consider adding about 6 drops of Rescue Remedy
(or similar calming remedy) in the dogs water for a few days. Also you
may have to consider a second dog for company.

How do I stop my dog from barking?
If
your dog has recently started barking for long periods of time – and
this is not normal behavior, then you will need to consider the information in my
report called ‘Stop My Dog Fretting’. It is provided for free with the
purchase of my books.
If
your dog has always been a barker and it is driving you mad, check out
the chapter in my book on Dog Psychology – this will fix your problems
95% of the time. If your dog is in the remaining 5%, then I’d suggest a
specific training collar as a last resort.
